Willowgate trout fishery- Big catches have been a feature of recent days at Willowgate. Biggest fish was a 15lb brown captured last week. I will post a photo and some more details as i get them. Other notable catches were James Lister and Greg Donnelly who landed 55 and 35 respectively on 6 hr catch and release tickets. 90 fish for 2 rods is staggering action. Again all of these fish were beautifully conditioned and fought very hard. Fish are well spread out around the pond now as water temperatures rise steadily. Other massive captures include Wullie Leach who nailed 4 for 14lb plus another 35 returned and L.Rhind who had 34 on catch and release. F Rigby had 18 on a 4 hr c+r ticket. Allan Johnson had this 7lb fish pictured below on a Nomad. Bernard Robinson also landed a 7lb fish on a black nomad.
Successful methods are varied which can be expected now we are having some real spring weather. Imitative patterns are coming into their own now with methods ranging from straight lining tiny black buzzers, nymphing with GH hares ears and PTN's to targeting the free rising fish with CDC's. Black shuttlecock buzzers being a favourite at this time of year. Again small is the key after the cold winter with natural imitations in sizes 14 and 16 being most effective. Lures are still working also with the freshly stocked fish with damsel variations, nomads and blobs featuring heavily. Spring is the best time of year to target fish on imitation patterns as the water temperature is perfect for active feeding so if you're after that memorable bumper haul then concentrate on trying to fool the fish.
