Willowgate trout fishery- Big tides

Willowgate trout fishery- A huge low pressure over the Atlantic caused a massive tidal surge with recorded tides being 5.3m which was much higher than the predicted tide of 4.6m. This is biggest tide for years but as can be seen from the photos there was no problem with the water reaching the fishery.

Willowgate trout fishery- Open day 28th March 2010

Willowgate trout fishery- The open day was a great sucess today. Even with the blustery wind good numbers of anglers turned out. Special interest were the spey casting demonstrations and the casting competition. The fishing was steady with some good catches for those who battled the breeze. The included a 11lb rainbow for Greg Donnelly and a nice 4lb brown for young Macauley. Unlucky to Hugh who after fighting a massive brown estimated at 15lb for 20 mins lost it at the net. Better luck next time round. the fish covered 10 pegs before coming unnder control. We currently have a lot of big fish in Willowgate. Some are over 20lb and won't evade capture for long. To have a chance of contacting these monsters contact the fishery on 017378446546 to make a booking.

Willowgate trout fishery- Weekend report

Its a blustery day today at Willowgate but plenty of fishers are braving the conditions. Catches have been good over the last few days. Catches included Robin Hutton who released 4 including one at 7lb. William Dorran released a good fish at 12lb. Mr Sutherland had 2 for 10lb. Catch and release anglers are enjoying plenty of sport with good numbers figuring in most catches. As the water temperatures begin to rise fish are switching heavily onto natural food items. Size 16 buzzers being very effective. During the morning fish are being caught readily in the surface layers on shallow tactics on floating lines. During the middle of the day as the sun is getting stronger fishing pressure will usually put the fish a bit deeper so a change to an intermediate reaps rewards. By late afternoon a floating line becomes more effective again. As always it is very important to find fishes depth. Also the recent rise in water temperature has encouraged fish to chase fast moving lures, so expect strong takes and keep leader BS over 6lb.

Willowgate trout fishery- Dolphin

Willowgate trout fishery- Exciting site today in the River Tay next to the trout fishery. A dolphin making its way up river. Crusing quickly around the river it seemed like the animal was feeding. Hopefully this may be a sign of a run of salmon up river as a seal was following close behind. I will post a few better photos next week.

Willowgate trout fishery- Report 11th March

The fish really on yestreday with constact action from dawn to dusk. Notably most sucessful tactics were floating lines as the slightly warmer day temperatures have warmed the water. Fish were very active with stripped lures most effective. Yellow and white patterns such as Cats Whisker varients were doing the damage. Ron Lusher and Jimmy Alexander both had 3 for 9 1/2 lbs. Dave Cook released 9 after landing 2 for 5lb. Dennis Brown had 12. And Chris Kirk scored a catch and release score of 16. Fish up to 9lb were caught yesterday. The average size of fish is still above 2.6lb. Many anglers were saying that fish were coming short and they were experiencing takes on almost every cast. A good remedy to this is to change down a fly size and expect takes on the dangle with the fly sinking slowly through the water layers.

Conditions today are mild with a light westerly breeze and broken cloud cover. Fish are being caught already, but a slightly slower day may be expected after the heavy catches yesterday. Though as i am writing the cloud is thickening so we will have to wait and see. As you can see above fish are starting show on the surface more consistenly as buzzers respond to warmer air temperatures.

Willowgate trout fishery- Big spring tides

The big tides this week have allowed us to prepare for the open day on Sunday 28th March. These pontoons will also form the Willowgate harbour allowing boats to land from the river in any water conditions. The big tides gave our wildlife ponds a good fill.

Working hard to keep fishery ice free

The ice is thin enough for us to keep the fishery open. Fishing is still good with plenty of fish being caught. The water is extremely clear so expect a good fight when you contact one of the big overwintered fish.
