Willowgate trout fishery- Report 11th March

The fish really on yestreday with constact action from dawn to dusk. Notably most sucessful tactics were floating lines as the slightly warmer day temperatures have warmed the water. Fish were very active with stripped lures most effective. Yellow and white patterns such as Cats Whisker varients were doing the damage. Ron Lusher and Jimmy Alexander both had 3 for 9 1/2 lbs. Dave Cook released 9 after landing 2 for 5lb. Dennis Brown had 12. And Chris Kirk scored a catch and release score of 16. Fish up to 9lb were caught yesterday. The average size of fish is still above 2.6lb. Many anglers were saying that fish were coming short and they were experiencing takes on almost every cast. A good remedy to this is to change down a fly size and expect takes on the dangle with the fly sinking slowly through the water layers.

Conditions today are mild with a light westerly breeze and broken cloud cover. Fish are being caught already, but a slightly slower day may be expected after the heavy catches yesterday. Though as i am writing the cloud is thickening so we will have to wait and see. As you can see above fish are starting show on the surface more consistenly as buzzers respond to warmer air temperatures.
